Synopsis
Cooper receives a voicemail from his grandmother; upon travelling back home, to the place of his nightmares, he discovers she is missing, and that he is part of some sort of mystical family. He must learn how to use his powers to save his grandmother.
Characters
I loved Cooper, and his interactions with Betsy and the twins were just wonderful. Lillie Mae I thought could have been developed a little more; as a reader, I knew I was supposed to care that she was missing but I didn't fully care. That said, I thought that the prologue introduced the relationships between characters very well and very quickly - it felt natural, more like I was in the story rather than just observing.
As I said in my Goodreads review, it did feel a little "Hey look how special I am!" at times. Cooper went from looking for his missing grandmother to fighting the big bad evil guy in less than a week. It felt too rushed, and I think slowing it down and having development would have been a little better. I would have enjoyed reading about Cooper more in general, since I read about so few gay male leads.
Plots
Although it begain simple - find grandmother - the plot spiralled into this world of paranormal, supernatural, good versus evil, are-the-good-guys-really-the-good-guys, pile of oh no I think I'm lost. Thankfully, Cooper as the main character was just as lost.
I honestly think that there was so much tension right from the prologue, that slowing down would have been beneficial. There is no break from the tension, with the characters going from one disaster to the next. I would have loved to see this slow down and become a trilogy. That said, even as it stands, I want to read more about Cooper and his future (spoiler alert: the main character, the chosen one, lives).
Time it took to read - one afternoon
Would recommend to - paranormal/supernatural fans, or anyone who wants to have a break from the kill-your-gays trope
Enjoyed with - green tea and pomegranate juice

See you next week!
