2019 - Independent ladies
This one has been a bit of a challenge, because so many protagonists end up in romantic relationships.
1. Circe in Circe by Madeline Miller
As a goddess, Circe does have some romantic relationships, but ultimately the novel is about her doing her own thing. It is wonderful.
2. Lovelace in A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
Can I talk about this series enough? Apparently not.
3. Ellie in The Girl With the Red Balloon by Katherine Locke
While there is a romantic subplot, I love that Ellie acts without the romance being her motivation.
4. Lena in Sin du Jour series by Matt Wallace
Again, there is a romantic subplot, but again Lena does not act with romance being her main motivation; she is brilliant and focused on what she loves doing.
5. Inej in Six of Crows series by Leigh Bardugo
I'm happy with her ending, but Inej is a badass and I adore her.
2017 - Book trends you're tired of seeing
Do I really have to limit myself to five?
1. The Chosen One trope
I'm just tired of the protagonist waltzing in and becoming an immediate expert, and knowing more than the actual experts, just because they are The Chosen One.
2. Woman has no personality outside relationships with men
This one doesn't need an explanation, it just needs to end. As a follow up...
3. Woman cannot have child, therefore is a bad person
Along with...
4. Woman devotes entire life to having child and to nothing else
Actually I think I'm just tired of seeing trends around women and wanting children... No, I think it can be summed up in one...
5. Badly written women.
That'll do it. I'm tired of badly written women.
What trends are you tired of seeing?
