trend: rainbow
This is going to be quite a long post.
When Deramores launched the competition, I knew I had to do something for the rainbow theme. I loved doing maths at school, and reading on the latest physics advancements has kind of become a hobby. Rainbows fascinate me, especially since they are more than just the seven (or six) colours that we are so used to - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, (indigo), violet.
I wanted to combine my love of colour, crochet, and being a bit of a nerd. I decided to get fourteen colours of Stylecraft Special DK, plus an extra neutral colour to tie them all the colours together. Before I continue with giving you details and pretty pictures, I'd like to share with you a conversation I had when I was still crocheting the smaller pieces.
Me: I got a new blanket to work on too
Ash: How is that looking?
Me: Gorgeous at the moment, but going to require a lot of sewing
Ash: How big will it be?
Me: It's looking kind of small, maybe 4' square
Ash: HOW IS THAT SMALL. THE (bleep)
Me: It's a blanket! They're meant to be like 6' plus
Ash: Touche but still. Mate that's a mission.
Me: Yes it is. All made of mini hexagons
Ash: ... That's not a hobby, that's just scary
So I guess if you craft, I think it is easy to forget just how much time, work, and effort goes into making something. Thanks to Ash, I was reminded that making a blanket really is a tough thing to do. Now on to the pretty pictures.
On to the crochet itself.
Then the sewing began.
This takes me to where I am now.
I am enjoying making this blanket, but with so many hexagons, I am genuinely surprised I haven't lost my mind. I did have to have a break for a few days (my health took a knock) and let me assure you, the blanket is as warm and cuddly as it looks.
I will be finishing this, but I won't be working on it at the pace I have been since 3 April when I started it. I will be working on it every day though, as I have been, just because I so desperately want it finished. I adore it, despite the fact that it is so much work. Each hexagon took about 30mins to do, and another 20-30mins to do the finishing round and attach it to the rest of the hexagons.
I love this blanket, so if you would like me to write up the pattern I created for it, do let me know. I wrote it as I went along, which did require a little bit of frogging, but since I have done 196 of the blasted things, I think it is safe to say the pattern works well. Doesn't it look gorgeous? The colours just flow into each other so beautifully.
I do admit defeat though, and as much as I'm gutted I couldn't finish it by today, I'm happy that I didn't rush it to get it done. I also want to add a very simple border of parchment, just to really unite all the colours together. I'll keep you updated on that.
See you next week!
