Books Completed
YES! i finished The Mummy! by Jane Loudon. I have so many feelings about this book. I went into it expecting a Gothic horror, and that's what I got. It's also a romantic comedy. I have no idea how, but it is absolutely both genres at once. The Gothic horror part comes from the mummy, King Cheops, himself; he is wise and articulate, and as a character is utterly terrifying at times. At the same time, it is so incredibly funny at some moments that I cried from laughing so hard. Add to that the romances, honestly I just cannot recommend this book enough. Oh and no one can convince me that Lords Noodle and Doodle were not dating.
Books in Progress
I've made some good progress on Victory of Eagles, the next book in the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. I finished Part 1 and burst out crying. I knew I would get a bit emotional (and no spoilers as to why) but I didn't realise it would be that powerful.
Games
Of course I have been playing more Fallout 4. I have finally made it to the Institute, proudly wearing an armoured dressing gown and a pirate hat. My character has never looked so snazzy.
Music
The new album, Pray for the Wicked, by Panic! at the Disco has been playing nonstop since I got it. It is so beautiful. I want to list my top three songs from it, but honestly I'd list the entire album.
Crochet
I've continued making progress on my autumn shawl, but I've also returned to my entrelac scarf. I'm hoping to post a picture soon. The weather has not been kind to my energy levels, so laying it on the floor has been a struggle.
Anyway, let's move on...
Top Five Wednesday
This week is about books you want to read before the end of the year.
Halfway through the year, and it's time to evaluate our reading goals and take a look at our TBRs for the second half of the year!
1. Circe and Song of Achilles, by Madeline Miller
I'm counting both of these together since I'll read them back to back. but I want to read them desperately. Once I finish Tome Topple and 24in48 I'll be reading these two hopefully. Both books are retellings of ancient Greek myths; this is something I'm studying, so I feel like I should read them.
2. The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire, by Edward Gibbon
OK hear me out. I've wanted to read this masterpiece for a decade, and I've made good progress on the first volume. That's the first of six volumes, if you're unfamiliar with the brick. It is huge, and full of judgements, but as a book I just find it fascinating.
3. Raymond E Feist
This is one of those oh-if-only, but I'll add it to the list. There's a large amount of books that all link into one giant story arc, and I really want to read them. The idea of epic fantasy appeals to me, but in reality I struggle with staying focused on them. I've read the first four books, and I will be re-reading them. I came across them when I was in my early teens, so this has been on my TBR for way too long.
4. Binti, series by Nnedi Okorafor
When I first heard about this series, I knew I immediately had to read it... and then I got distracted by a lot of other books. It happens. I want to read them still, despite not really reading a lot of science fiction.
5. The Three Body Problem, series by Cixin Liu
Like with Binti, I wanted to read it as soon as I heard about it. I'm aware that it is complex science fiction, and I'm not often a fan of that. I'm going into it expecting to be very confused about everything, and that's OK. Not every book needs to be understood on the first reading.
So there we have it. What are the books you want to finish before the end of the year?
