For those unaware, #24in48 is a readathon that happened over the weekend. I blogged about it last week, and wanted to tell you how it went. Unless said otherwise, all books are by Sue Grafton.
The short answer is that it went badly.
I started at midnight, and I finished G is for Gumshoe so I'm very happy with that. I then went to bed, and started on H is for Homicide. This is when things went more than a little wrong.
My timer glitched, and reset itself to 0. That's fine, I took a screen shot so I was able to start a countdown instead, working my way towards 0. This worked for a while... until my phone crashed. (My Kobo eReader also "crashed" but it turns out the memory card just fell out.)
My phone was quite old, maybe three or four years, but the crash was so sudden and so unexpected, I had no idea what to do. I had only read for a few hours. I thought I had enough time, so I went out to buy a new phone.
My new phone is lovely, and works. Onwards with the reading.
I finished H is for Homicide then went for a nap. I needed to sleep. I woke up at 3am, ready to go! And read I did.
It then got to a point where, no matter what I did, there just would not be enough hours in the day to finish the full 24 hours. I finished I is for Innocent and made progress on J is for Judgement but I stopped with 15 hours of the 24 left.
I do think reading for a total of nine hours is great, and I'm so happy with finishing multiple books. I am going to push myself to do it again, and hopefully I won't have the tech issues again. I loved doing it, and I genuinely enjoyed the camaraderie of everyone watching their timers. It was a wonderful weekend, and I cannot wait to do it again. I'm not enjoying the books as much as I did when I first read them fifteen years ago - I can now see all their flaws and Kinsey's internalised misogyny - but I am enjoying working my way through the alphabet.
In addition, I also started The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe using Serial Reader. I'm loving this book again, as it has been a decade since I first read it. Things are still very light and happy in the book, so you know I'm early on. All the reading provided an excellent distraction, and I'll continue to post good distractions here. On my Tumblr I'll be posting politically and distractions as well, so feel free to check that out.
Did you do #24in48? How was it?
