The jacket uses Tunisian crochet, and you can get a tutorial here, but fear not! While traditionally Tunisian crochet does require long hooks, you're only working five stitches. I was able to use my normal Tulip Etimo hook, which has a handle, so any hook with enough space to hold five loops should suffice.
Onwards to the pattern...
3.5mm hook, sock yarn (3-6 months). Also works with 4mm hook and double knit, but the cardigan will be larger (6-9 months). UK terms throughout (but a treble is a US double).
TUNISIAN CROCHET COLLAR
5 stitches, 60 rows. Once you have the 60th row complete, slip stitch your way across the final row.
Chain 2; this does not count as a stitch. Into the “chain” of the Tunisian crochet, do one treble into each of the first 9 chain. Chain 2. Without skipping any stitches, do one treble into each of the next 9 chain. Chain 2. Without skipping any stitches, do one treble into each of the next 24 chain. Chain 2. Without skipping any stitches, do one treble into each of the next 9 chain. Chain 2. Without skipping any stitches, do one treble into each of the next 9 chain.
Row 1 should therefore give you 9tr, 2ch, 9tr, 2ch, 24tr, 2ch, 9tr, 2ch, 9tr.
Chain 2 to turn. Do one treble into each treble. Into each 2ch sp, do 2tr 2ch 2tr.
Row 6
Chain 2 to turn. Do one treble into each treble. Into each 2ch sp, do 1tr 1ch 1tr.
Do *not* break the yarn. Cast on five stitches. Work the Tunisian crochet so that you have five stitches all the way across the band, but picking up each treble from Row 6 to join it onto the cardigan. Each row should correspond to each treble of Row 6.
When you reach the first 1ch sp of Row 6, work one row into the space, then skip until the next 1ch sp, and work one row into the space. This creates the sleeves. Continue along the back, working each row of five stitches across, picking up one treble per row. When you reach the next pair of 1ch sp, repeat; work one row into the space, skip until the next 1ch sp, and work one row into the space. Continue along the front again, working each row of five stitches across, picking up one treble per row.
Chain 2 to turn. Work one treble into each row of the Tunisian crochet.
Row 8
Chain 2 to turn. Work one treble into each treble.
Repeat Row 8 until you reach your desired length. Weave in your ends securely once complete.
While I've not done it myself, so I can't show any pictures of it, you may wish to end the jacket on a third band of Tunisian crochet.
