2014 - Top Five Authors
Oh this is impossible.
1. Ann Radcliffe
Mostly writing in the 1790s, her work isn't for everyone. It honestly takes time to adjust to the writing style of a different century. It is so worth it though, and I consider her the grandmother of Gothic fiction.
2. Oscar Wilde
He's Oscar Wilde, what more is there to say?
3. Madeline Miller
With an uncanny ability to take Classical myth and retell those same myths in even more heartbreaking and devastating ways than the myths were originally, I had to include her.
4. Bettany Hughes
I'm including her as a nonfiction historian, because she can put you right in the middle of the history. You can be in the middle of the crowd listening to Socrates one moment, then in a museum looking at artefacts in another. It's beautiful.
5. Jane Austen
She wrote with extraordinary insight into people's hearts and minds, and wrote what women today still want: someone who apologises for being awful, respects boundaries, and doesn't immediately propose to your best friend.
